Australia has some of the world's highest wages for ordinary jobs — construction workers, truck drivers, aged-care staff, chefs and nurses can earn multiples of Gulf salaries. But Australia's system is also one of the strictest: everything runs through the Department of Home Affairs, English tests are mandatory, and there are no shortcuts. Here's the honest map.
1. The two real families of visas
Employer-sponsored (fastest if you have an offer)
An Australian employer nominates you for a skilled role. The main temporary route is the Skills in Demand visa, and the permanent one is the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). The employer must be real, the role must be on the skilled occupation list, and you typically need a skills assessment plus competent English.
Points-tested (no job offer needed)
You submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and get ranked on age, English, experience and qualifications. High scorers get invited to apply for the Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) or regional (491) visas. This suits engineers, IT professionals, nurses, accountants and tradespeople with strong English.
2. The two things to start NOW
- English test: IELTS or PTE Academic. "Competent" English is the minimum for most routes; higher scores mean many more points. Test slots and preparation take months — book early.
- Skills assessment: your occupation's assessing authority (e.g. Engineers Australia, TRA for trades, ANMAC for nurses) must assess your qualifications and experience. This alone can take 3–6 months.
Do these two before you pay anyone anything. An agent who wants lakhs before you've even done an English test is selling you air.
3. Honest warnings
- No Working Holiday for Pakistan/India: Australia's Working Holiday (subclass 417) is not open to Pakistani or Indian passport holders. Any agent offering it is lying — check the eligible-country list on the Home Affairs site.
- "Farm job, no English needed": even seasonal agricultural routes need proper sponsorship and documentation. "Just pay and fly" does not exist.
- Fake skills assessments: only the designated assessing authorities count. A certificate printed by an agent is worthless.
4. Step-by-step (points-tested route)
- Check your occupation is on the skilled occupation list on the Home Affairs website.
- Get your skills assessment + sit your English test.
- Submit an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect.
- Wait for an invitation round — higher points get invited first.
- Invited? Lodge the visa application with medical + police checks.
